An Interview With Founder Katie Hammers

What made you decide to start Branching Beauty?

The Branching Beauty site is a creative outlet for me. It’s also a way for me to give back. I’ve realized that I have a lot to give. I’ve got a lot of resources and contacts to share with others who are pursuing their goals in life. If I can share what I’ve learned, then I feel better about myself and when I’m feeling my best then I’ve got the confidence to go out there and make my dreams come true. It’s as simple as that.

What originally made you decide to go into the Beauty Industry?

In the beginning I was in front of the camera and I thought that would continue to be my ultimate goal. Instead I soon found myself to be very interested in the techniques going on in the makeup trailers and backstage. There is a lot to makeup artistry. It’s not just the ability to look at a face and determine what kind of eyeliner to use. I’m getting ahead of myself aren’t I? I originally started as a hairstylist. I was trained by the best at The Vidal Sassoon Academy in Santa Monica. Right out of school I was hired into one of the top two salons in LA, Chris McMillan Salon. I was hired as an assistant and from there I went to the other top salon, John Frieda Sally Hershberger. At John Frieda I assisted one of the biggest stylists in the city, her name is Tracey Cunningham. Tracey was amazing and the salon was impeccable with an amazing pool in the center. Though I was happy in the salon I realized that I favored Makeup Artistry over Hair and I left the salon to pursue it. Shortly after leaving John Frieda, within two weeks I was in New York working the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Bryant Park. I worked a lot of amazing shows but was particularly taken by the Heart Truth Show, which is a celebrity fashion show for charity.  I’ll never forget that experience.

Did you go to Makeup School?

I did go to makeup school, I went after I had already landed big advertising campaigns. I did the Hair and Makeup for Oakley Eye Wear for years. I ended up going back to makeup school after that. I went to a school specific to editorial makeup called the MKC Academy. MKC was founded by celebrity makeup artist Margaret Kimura and she taught classes there as well.

Have you ever worked at a Makeup Counter?

Yes I have and to this day it was the best makeup training I’ve ever received. I worked at Neiman Marcus at The Bobbi Brown counter and I also worked at Anastasia Beverly Hills as head makeup artist.

Who inspires you?

I’m inspired by anyone that has endeared a lot in life and managed to spin it into a positive. I’m inspired by the people who get back up after being knocked down over and over again. I’m truly inspired by unique people and the ones that don’t quit.

Whats the biggest lesson you’ve learned in Hollywood?

You can either sink or you can SWIM.

What is your true passion?

I’m passionate about starting my own company and being an entrepreneur but my true love has always been writing. Ever since I was a little girl and wrote “The Ant Story” and “Life From A Bugs Perspective”. My Mom will still laugh to this day if you ask her about The Ant Story. This combination is what makes the Branching Beauty site so exciting for me. I can do both.

Whats it like to be a career woman in 2017?

Its liberating. Thanks to social media, people are now understanding that a career person or an artist can be professional with more than one title. For instance on Instagram, you’ll notice that the people with the biggest followings have more than one career title. For example, a Writer/ Photographer or an Actress with a Fashion Label.
